Abstract
State of the art and prospects of actuators development in robotics are considered. It is shown, that traditional drive systems are inferior to those of living organisms, which are the prototypes for technical devices. Comparative analysis of drive systems based on different physical principles is given. Creation of new types of equipment to be used in space, in the depths of the ocean, and in medicine calls for fundamentally new specifications for drives. It requires innovative mindset to the creation of drive technology. However, it is noted that in the past decades there was no breakthrough innovation in this area. Urgency of fundamental and applied research in the field of fundamentally new drives, especially for soft, flexible and biocompatible dexterous manipulators for cytology, biomedical and minimally invasive surgery is highlighted.

Key words
